dans la bio de Taigi 1899. Preface:
IN offering to the public a translation of the Life of the Venerable Anna Maria Taigi, the translator has had chiefly in view the design of allaying in some degree the dread and consternation raised in the minds of some by startling rumors of a "Three Days' Darkness," of wars, pestilence, and other calamities, threatened by Heaven. No allusion whatever has been made to them in this history; which, moreover, having been written in Rome, under the eyes, as it were, of the Promoter of the Cause, must be considered as presenting all the marks of genuineness. The author, too, had full liberty to consult all documents and papers giving information relative to her life, and properly deposed to by competent witnesses. The history was afterwards approved of by the highest official authorities, bearing on its pages the Imprimatur of Laurentius Salvati, Sub-Promoter of the Faith, of Hieronymus Gigli, of the Order of St. Dominic and Master of the Apostolic Palace, and of Monsignor Castellacci, Archbishop of Petra and Vicegerent of Rome. The translator feels that no words of his can form as fitting a conclusion to this note as the very excellent remarks made by the Rt. Rev. Bishop of Philadelphia, in a recent Pastoral Letter, which he here begs leave to quote. He says: "It is, therefore, evident, either that these prophecies were not found among the papers in question, or that they were not considered of sufficient authenticity, weight, or value to justify their publication in the authorized history of her life.
"Let all minds, therefore, be calmed, and let us wait for the decision of the Church, the legitimate judge of such predictions, resting well assured that, no matter what horrors may be visited on the world in punishment for its crimes and infidelity, the Divine protection will be extended over all those who endeavor to avoid sin and to pass their lives in the holy love and fear of God." T. C. MIDDLETON, O. S. A.
