Pope Francis praised the priests who have worked in the slums of Argentina, in an interview broadcast in his native country on March 13, the 1st anniversary of his election to the papacy.
<br />
“They were not Communists,” the Pope said of the activist priests. “They were great priests who fought for life.” He said that the work of the priests he admired was “not ideological; it’s apostolic.” The Pontiff spoke particularly about the Movement of 3rd World Priests, saying that the organization was not influenced by the Marxist ideology that had prompted a Vatican caution about liberation theology. The papal interview, recorded in Rome two weeks earlier, was broadcast by a radio station in a slum of Buenos Aires, where Pope Francis served as archbishop before his papal election.

<br />
