The sport newspaper Marca confirmed that the Real Madrid Football Club decided to cancel the tiny cross appearing since 1920 on his escutcheon to avoid possible conflicts with the project of a multimillionaire tourist-sport resort on the Ras-al-Khamah island, one of the seven forming the State of the United Arab Emirates, wher islam is the official religion.
This change will affect only the Real image in the muslim countries, and was confirmed during the official presentation of the resort, which will cost around one thousand million dollars and will open the doors January 2015. According the daily Marca the club authorities “took care of all the details”, and decided “to leave apart the cross appearing on the escutcheon to avoid any possible confusion or misunderstanding in an area whose majority of the population is Muslim”.
The decision of the club raised criticism both between the fans of the club and its rivals. On the social websites criticism abound. The fans lament the fact that the Real yielded to the pressure of the Arab market, and remind that in Spain the muslims enjoy full freedom to use the religious symbols. Others advice ironically the Club to change the names of some of the stars, like Cristiano Ronaldo and Ángel Di María.lien
