Après le mariage gay, l'Irlande débat du transgenre

Transgender recognition 'hugely significant'

Transgender people looking to have their preferred gender recognised by the State will no longer need a certificate from a psychiatrist.

In a cabinet agreement on Thursday, adults can now make a self-declaration under the Gender Recognition Bill.

Once enacted, the legislation will mean applicants can have their gender full recognised for all purposes – including the right to marry or enter a civil partnership.

New birth certs, passports and other relevant documentation can now be issued to those in the transgender community, ending the requirement of supporting statements from psychiatrists.

Tánaiste Joan Burton said the “international best practice” legislation comes after careful consideration of individual citizens and transgender representative groups.

There will be no change to the process for people transitioning aged 16-17 years.

Deputy Burton added: “This approach will have no impact on the treatment pathway which is completely separate from the civil registration process.”

Labour TD Kevin Humphreys said the bill places “Ireland firmly in the most progressive group of countries for the recognition of transgender people.”

Meanwhile, the Transgender Equality Network of Ireland (TENI) has called the move “hugely significant”.

“Ireland has now taken its place as an international leader in this human rights area.

“The government has shown great vision and conviction in ensuring the rights of trans people. This legislation will significantly improve the lived realities of trans people in Ireland,” said TENI chief executive Broden Giambrone.
