Cardinal Policarpo stays on beyond retirement age

Pope Benedict XVI has asked Portugal’s Dom José Policarpo to remain in his post as Lisbon’s Cardinal Patriarch for two years beyond his 75th birthday.

The Cardinal announced the Vatican’s decision on Sunday during a homily at Torres Vedras, saying he would remain “a bishop of God until the last moment”. Dom José presented his resignation last February, ahead of his 75th birthday, the normal age for clerical retirement. In May, he was elected as head of Portugal’s Episcopal Conference.here
