CHICAGO (AP) — About 150 firefighters responded when flames engulfed a 92-year-old church on Chicago’s South Side.

The Shrine of Christ the King Church is just south of the University of Chicago in the Woodlawn neighborhood. The extra-alarm fire started about 6 a.m. Wednesday, sending flames through the roof.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says there are no reports of injuries but a shelter next door for women and children was evacuated. Langford said firefighters were alerted by smoke alarms in a nearby building. He says they’re trying to save the steeple.

Langford says the fire appears accidental. He says officials were trying to determine if it was related to work being done in the church.

The church was built in 1923. In 2004 a fundraising driver was launched for renovations.

Ce sanctuaire bâti en 1923 par Henry J. Schlacks, inspiré par l'architecture italienne, avait été presque entièrement détruit en 1976 par un précédent incendie. Il avait été reconstruit en 1980 .
Les neuf prêtres qui résident auprès de l'église, et qui sont tous saufs, ont déclaré que le sanctuaire sera reconstruit, comme il advint il y a 39 ans...
Les pompiers ont pu sauver la statue de l'Enfant Jésus, très vénérée par les fidèles.Source DNA info.
