Journaliste: Comment les Orthodoxes réagiront-ils aux arrangements nouveaux ? Considéreront-ils les six mois à venir comme étant un test de la bonne foi œcuménique de Rome ?

John Hepworth: Il y a déjà des rumeurs selon lesquelles le Patriarche de Moscou a fortement encouragé ses négociateurs œcuméniques au Vatican de se hâter afin que les Anglicans ne prennent pas trop d’avance. Elles sont sans doute apocryphes ; cependant nous savons que l’Église orthodoxe russe est très proche de réaliser l’union avec Rome. C’est la plus importante des Églises orientales orthodoxes. Nous savons aussi que les Orthodoxes suivent la démarche anglicane de très près pour juger du point auquel Rome à l’intention sérieuse d’admettre les traditions chrétiennes différentes au sein de l’Église catholique. J’ai pu m’entretenir avec certains membres de l’Église Orthodoxe Grecque et de l’Église Copte à propos des parallèles entre leurs conversations avec Rome et les nôtres. L’unité chrétienne de par le monde en est à un point très similaire. La conversation et la coopération commencent à évoluer vers des formes d’unité organique qui sauvegardent les diverses traditions chrétiennes de liturgie et de spiritualité.

Inquirer: How will the Orthodox react to the new arrangements? Will they be viewing the next six months as a test of Rome's ecumenical bona fides?

JH: Already there are stories circulating that the Patriarch of Moscow has urged his ecumenical negotiators in the Vatican to hurry in order that the Anglicans do not get too far ahead. They're probably apocryphal, but we do know that the Russian Orthodox Church is very close to achieving unity with Rome. It is the largest of the Orthodox churches of the East. We also know that the Orthodox are watching the Anglican process very closely to try to assess the extent to which Rome is serious about tolerating many different traditions of Christianity within the scope of the Catholic Church. I have had conversations with members of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Coptic Church about the parallels between their conversations with Rome and ours. Christian unity throughout the world is at a very similar moment. Conversation and co-operation are beginning to evolve into forms of organic unity that still protect diverse Christian traditions of worship and spirituality.
