Pro-life institutions in Bolivia call for prohibition against sale of morning after pill

La Paz, Sep. 22, 2006 (CNA) - The Institute on Bioethics of the Catholic University of Bolivia and the Apostolate of the New Evangelization, ANEPROVIDA, have called on the country’s political and healthcare leaders to prohibit the sale of the morning after pill because of its abortifacient nature and its attack on women’s health and traditional mores.

In response to news that the drug is now being sold in Bolivia, both institutions noted that the pill is “potentially abortifacient” because of its anti-implantation mechanism.

They argued that the drug “can seriously harm the health of women who take it” and can cause cancer and other illnesses.

They warned that the promotion and distribution of the pill would lead to the deterioration of “morality, “especially among teenagers, who think they can have sexual relations, even promiscuously, using contraceptives, and as a last resort, emergency contraception, without getting pregnant. In this way sexual promiscuity and conjugal infidelity is being promoted.”

The institutions called on all Bolivians to denounce “the illegal sale of the morning after pill.”

It seems like every other day we hear from a different Health Minister on the South American Continent trying to further promote the "culture of death." Those protesting the illegal sale of the morning after pill are rightly denounceing the actions of the Health Minister in Bolivia because these drugs can seriously harm women who take them and even cause cancer and other illnesses. Why would a Health Minister who is responsible for health issues not want to see and avoid the serious health risks these drugs can have on women and young teens? Why indeed! The moral implications alone should be enough to not promote the use of these drugs. It seems that the Health Ministers in South America are not really interested in protecting the health of women in their countries. May the light of God shine on the entire human race especially on those that are responsible for creating and passing our laws and governing our nations. As always: Pray! Pray! Pray!
